the big round trip

Nach Abschluss der letzten Reparaturen, kann die Fahrt um Island herum beginnen und die ersten Tage führen mich zunächst auf die Insel Heimaey, die größte der Vestmannaeyjar Inseln, im Süden Islands. Hier steige ich auf den Vulcan Eldfell, der 1973 ausgebrochen ist und die Insel stark verändert hat. Dort kann man immer noch die Hitze der Vulkans wörtlich spüren. Weiter geht es mit einer kleinen Bootstour um die Inseln herum und zurück auf Islands Hauptinsel, fahre ich mit Esmeralda nach Þórsmörk, wo Esmeralda aber die nächste kleine Überraschung für mich parat hält.

After I finished the last repairs, I can begin with my trip around Iceland. During my first days, I visit the island Heimaey, which is the biggest of the Westman Islands, in the south of Iceland.. I hike up the volcano Eldfell, which erupted 1973. You can still literally feel the heat of the volcano up there. After that, I take a little boat tour around the islands and as soon I get back to Icelands main island, I drive Esmeralda to Þórsmörk, where she has another little surprise for me…

At the beginning of my time in Iceland, I used the unique nature and landscape in the south, to shoot a music video with the trio Tourlou, that I met on the ferry from the Faroe Islands to Iceland, for their Icelandic song “Sofðu, unga ástin mín”. www.tourloumusic.com

Schließlich brachte die Fähre Esmeralda und mich nach Island. Jedoch war die Freude nicht von langer Dauer, denn schon auf dem Hinweg zur Fähre, deuteten sich die nächsten Probleme an. An der Hinterachse lief schwarzes Öl oder Fett hinunter, was ein Hinweis darauf ist, dass die dortigen Dichtringe nicht mehr das tun, wozu sie da sind, nämlich dichten. Eine aufwendige Reparatur steht also bevor. Zum Glück ist es heutzutage recht einfach, sich Ersatzteile in alle Welt schicken zu lassen, zumal man in Island auch gut an Defender-Teile kommt, da die Autos dort sehr beliebt sind. Des Weiteren habe ich im Süden Islands ein Musikvideo gedreht, für ein Trio, das ich auf der Fähre kennen gelernt habe und am Gletscher Sólheimajökull wartet eine ganz besondere Überraschung auf mich.

The ferry brought Esmeralda and me to Iceland finally, but the was something disappointing right away. Already on the way to the ferry, I could realize the next problems, because there was black oil or grease leaking out of the back axis. This is an indication of leaking gaskets around the axis, so I had to do a complex repair. Luckily it is very easy in these days to send spare parts around the world and in Iceland you can get Defender parts very easily too, because these cars are very common there. I also shot a music video in the south of Iceland, with a trio that I met on the ferry before and at the glacier Sólheimajökull there was a big surprise waiting for me.

Nachdem ich nun ein paar Abstecher über Südeuropa und Marokko hinter mir habe, geht die große Reise erst richtig los. Zunächst fahre ich dazu mit der Fähre von Dänemark aus auf die Färöer Inseln. Ein Einwohner, mit dem ich auf der Fähre die Kabine geteilt habe, hat mir empfohlen auf den Eiðiskollur hoch zu wandern, doch das Wetter macht mir zunächst einen Strich durch die Rechnung. Aber nach einem Abstecher zu der Lagune bei Saksun, sollte ich doch noch erfolgreich sein.

After my little trips through Southern Europe and Morocco, I’m finally getting really started. At first I’m taking the ferry to the Faroe Islands from Denmark. An inhabitant, who shared the cabin with me on the ferry, recommended to hike up the Eiðiskollur, but the weather wasn’t treating me well at first. So I went to the lagoon close to Saksun and afterwards I should be successful in the end.

Auf meinem Weg nach Barcelona zickt Esmeralda mal wieder etwas herum mit ein paar kleinen Wehwehchen. Neben einer Türdichtung, die langsam herunter fällt und einer defekten Zentralverriegelung an zwei Türen, macht vor allem das AGR-Ventril (Abgasrückführungsventil) komische Geräusche. Auch der ADAC hat bereits in Deutschland gemeint, dass dieses Quietschen so nicht ganz normal zu sein scheint. Bei Land Rover in Verona hätte ich es tauschen lassen können, allerdings hätten sie die Teile vorher bestellen müssen. Schließlich bin ich in Österreich auf eine Werkstatt getroffen, die mir helfen konnte. Aber bevor die ganzen Probleme gelöst werden, geht es für mich aufs Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona.

On my way to Barcelona Esmeralda is moaning with some little problems again. Beside a door sealing, which is slowly falling down and a failure in the central locking system, the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculating) is causing some strange noises. Also a mechanic of the ADAC (German Automobile Association) has the opinion that this squeaking is not normal. A Land Rover workshop in Verona, Italy, could have fixed it, but after ordering the parts from somewhere. In the end I found a workshop in Austria that could help me. But before all these problems got fixed, I went to the Primavera Sound festival.

Endlich ist es soweit und die Reise geht weiter, zunächst über den Walchensee in Bayern und der Gleirschklamm in Österreich, weiter auf die italienische Insel Sardinien, wo mit der Gola Gorropu eine weitere Schlucht auf mich wartet. Nebenbei zeige ich euch noch meine selbst gebaute Camping-/ Solardusche.

So finally I’m going on with my trip. At first I visited the lake Walchensee in Bavaria and the gorge Gleirschklamm in Austria, after I went to the Italian island Sardinia. There I visited the Gorropu canyon. And beside I show you my self built camping/ solar shower.

Im Januar 2018 sind Esmeralda und ich bereits auf eine große Testfahrt gestartet, in das wunderschöne Marokko.

Zunächst als kleines Experiment, habe ich auf meinem youtube-Kanal einen Vlog gestartet. Das erste Video ist nun fertig und das zweite schon im Kasten und bald fertig geschnitten. Aber zunächst geht es nur um das Thema Weltreise und warum überhaupt? Vergesst nicht, den Kanal zu abonnieren, um immer auf dem neusten Stand zu bleiben!

As an experiment at first, I started a vlog on my youtube channel. The first video is finished now and the second already shot, but still in the editing, but will be also online soon.
