Dritter und letzter Teil meiner kleinen Island Trilogie: Mit dem Besuch beim Gullfoss, dem vielleicht meist besuchten Wasserfall in Island, beende ich meine Fahrt entlang des Golden Circle und fahre über die “Strommastenpiste” F338 zum Gletscher Langjökull, wo man wohl bis an die Kante des Eises fahren kann. Weiter geht die Fahrt in die Westfjords und dann nach Osten über die Städte Akureyri und Húsavík. Besonders eindrucksvoll finde ich die Wasserfälle Dettifoss und Selfoss. Von Möðrudalur geht’s wieder auf die Piste (F923) nach Süden und nach einem Stop bei den Gletscherlagunen Jökulsárlón und Fjallsárlón komme ich wieder an meinem Ausgangspunkt im Süden an, aber ich wäre nicht mit einem Defender nach Island gefahren, wenn ich nicht noch mal richtig ins Hochland fahren will. Also geht es über die F910 einmal quer durch, nördlich des großen Gletschers Vatnajökull. Die “Straße” ist doch schon recht anspruchsvoll und verlangt die volle Konzentration des Fahrers. Man kann auch leicht die Entfernung unterschätzen, denn vom Beginn der F910, am Abzweig von der F26, bis zum Ende in Askja, braucht man gut zehn Stunden reine Fahrzeit. Also kann man die Route nicht in einem Tag alleine schaffen (man muss ja auch erst noch zum Start der Piste fahren), erst recht, wenn man unterwegs hin und wieder anhält, um z.B. Fotos zu machen.
The third and last part of my little Iceland trilogy: I end my trip around the Golden Circle with a visit at the Gullfoss, probably the most visited waterfall in Iceland and drive along the “electric pole track” F338 to the glacier Langjökull, where you can drive until the edge of the ice. From there I continue to the west fjords and then east through the towns Akureyri and Húsavík. The waterfalls Dettifoss and Selfoss were very impressive. From Möðrudalur I head south on the track F923 and after a stop at the glacier lagoons Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón I get back to my starting point in the south. But I didn’t come to Iceland with a Defender, if I didn’t want explore the highlands a bit more. So I take the F910 north of the glacier Vatnajökull. This “road” is very challenging to the driver and you need to be fully concentrated. You underestimate the distance very easily here. From the beginning of the F910 at the intersection to the F26 you literally need around ten hours of driving time, so you cannot make the whole trip within one day (you also have to get to the starting point of the track first), especially if you stop from time to time, for example to take some photos.
